Understanding the Chain of Responsibility

Understanding the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) for the safe transport of goods by road is crucial in the transport and logistics industry, particularly in countries like Australia, where specific CoR laws are in place. These laws are in place to protect all parties in the transport supply chain, including people who send or receive goods, packers and loaders, operators and drivers, managers, and dispatchers.

The Chain of Responsibility Overview for WA as issued by Main Roads WA:

This factsheet covers:

  • Why the chain of responsibility legislation was introduced and passed by the Government of Western Australia in 2012
  • Who is covered by the chain of responsibility
  • What you need to do as part of this legislation
  • Links to the full legislation documents and contact information should you need it.

Understanding and implementing CoR is not just a legal requirement but also a fundamental aspect of running a safe, efficient, and responsible transport and logistics business.

Individuals involved in the transportation of goods in Western Australia must ensure that their cargo complies with the Road Traffic Laws in Western Australia. This includes adhering to regulations regarding the vehicle and load’s height, width, length, and weight, as well as ensuring that loads are secured correctly and safely, following the Load Restraint Guide.
